Sessions & Courses
I teach English levels from Starter (A1) to Advanced (C1). These levels are taken from the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).
I have a lot of experience in identifying learning needs and developing effective and interesting learning programmes to meet individual requirements. Indeed, this is what my learners regularly comment on.
The content for topics is agreed with you before the training, for example during a trial session, and we'll also discuss and review content throughout your learning.
All sessions, either single or as part of a course, are 60 minutes each. After every session, you'll receive copies of the learning material, as well as a copy of written feedback with corrections, useful vocabulary and pronunciation tips. You'll also be offered homework.
Just-in-time English
Booking two or three single sessions will be very useful if you need help quickly in English with specific tasks. Here are some examples:
- Preparing and giving presentations
- Making a sales pitch
- Networking conversations at conferences and trade fairs
- Handling questions at interviews
- Discussing performance during appraisals.
Mini-course
Better
Better is a mini-course of six sessions that provides intensive practice in skills and functional language. Functions are phrases that help us to communicate effectively in accurate and natural English in specific situations. You choose which skills you'd like to develop and the topics you'd like to learn. Here are some examples.
Better: | Examples of topics |
Speaking | Developing fluency through conversation and discussion; using audio and phonemic script to improve pronunciation. |
Listening | Becoming familiar with a wider range of accents to improve comprehension; recognizing weak and strong sounds in English. |
Reading | Improving reading speed; text-attack skills for greater comprehension. |
Writing | Planning and drafting for coherent texts; linking ideas and strengthening arguments; writing for specific genres. |
Communication | Starting conversations; participating in meetings; describing features and benefits; describing trends; giving updates. |
Exam preparation:
I can offer you targeted training in areas where you need the most improvement, in the Reading (& Use of English), Writing, Speaking and Listening papers for:
- IELTS
- Cambridge A2 Key, B1 Preliminary, B2 First, C1 Advanced.
English for Travel:
This also works very well as part of a mini-course, which again is mainly taught through speaking and listening tasks. Here are some options that you could consider:
Session 1 | Tourist information |
Session 2 | Tourist information / Shopping |
Session 3 | Shopping / Eating out |
Session 4 | Eating out / Making small talk and finding things in common |
Session 5 | Making small talk and finding things in common |
Session 6 | Dealing with problems |
Course
A course consists of 18 sessions.
I teach vocabulary, pronunciation, grammar and functions with a focus on speaking and listening tasks during lesson time. The topics can be Business English, General English or a combination of both.
You can also include sessions from:
- Just-in-time English
- Better
- Exam Preparation.
- English for Travel.
18 sessions may be also be enough to move you to the next level of the CEFR if you're already fairly close to it and just need a refresher.
However, if you're further away from your goal, you would generally need a minimum of 36 hours of training to improve your English by half a level. For a whole level, you would generally need a minimum of 72 hours.
If you have any questions about different session and course options, you're very welcome to email info@darrenwade.co.uk.
We can also discuss your needs in more detail in a trial session.
